Knowledge
These are some of the lessons I have learned and skills I have gained from making things.
- Shrinkflation happens even with wood
- Communicating a plan completely and with very few words inspires confidence.
- Brute force can be the right answer
- Don't put off finishing. Color matching later is hard.
- A good relationship with your landlord is worthwhile to maintain
- Wood moves.
- Unplanned adjustments in the moment can be better than your original plan
- A rustic look will grow on you
- Small things for comfort will pay dividends in your enjoyment later
- Leaving well done hard work behind for the next person feels good
- Written agreements are important.
- Don't do work in the attic in summer. (This was like the third time I learned this.)
- Detailed plans do not mean everything works, but they make a lot of it work.
- A lot of the stuff you think you can't part with you should. (This was a delayed lesson)
- Parallel does not mean square
- Polyurethane can work as glue
- Be extra careful when you are hot and tired. Sheetrock will not support you.
- Just because you can do something with a table saw does not mean you should.
